Lost in the Mackenzie

In the breathtaking landscapes of the Mackenzie, with the majestic Southern Alps and the sparkling waters of Lake Pukaki and Lake Ruataniwha, Karī, a young and mischievous kakī, found himself far from his family.

Drawn by the beauty and wonders of the land, his wanderings led him astray. But amidst the uncertainty, the vibrant sounds of laughter and learning beckoned him towards this exciting place called... Twizel Early Learning Centre (TELC).

The Magical World of TELC

From his vantage point, Karī witnessed a realm unlike any other. TELC was a haven of discovery where every child had a tale to tell.

He saw superheroes bravely embarking on missions, princesses twirling in beautiful gowns, explorers charting unknown territories, and bike riders racing with the wind. Their adventures, although different, had a common thread. They were nurtured by the unwavering dedication of the kaiako, who instilled in them the values of the revered Te Whāriki, New Zealand's Early Childhood Curriculum.

The Spirit of Community

The centre was more than just a place of learning; it was a melting pot of cultures and traditions. Karī watched as children from various backgrounds gathered.

Their songs and stories reflected Aotearoa's rich heritage. This unity, reminiscent of the principles of Te Tirito o Waitangi, was the very heart of TELC.

Lessons Beyond the Classroom

The children ventured outdoors under the caring watch of their kaiako and whānau. They learned to respect Te Ao Māori, understand the balance of nature, and imbibe the values of sustainability, cherishing every leaf, stone, and creature.

Their activities, infused with the Enviroschools principles, reflected a commitment to preserving the world they'd inherit.

A Lucky Encounter

As the shades of evening began to envelop the landscape and the children of TELC headed home with memories of another day of adventures, Karī felt a gentle presence beside him. An old family friend – a wise morepork – perched next to him with eyes that held countless stories.

"Lost, young kakī?" he asked in a soft, comforting tone.

Karī nodded, recounting his day and and the solace he’d found watching the children at TELC. With a nod, Matariki, the wise morepork, said, "TELC is indeed special. But now, let's get you home."

Under the guiding wings of the morepork, Karī soared through the skies of Twizel, finally reuniting with his family, his heart filled with gratitude and tales of the magical world of TELC.

About us

our philosophy

At Twizel Early Learning Centre, we provide an environment where tamariki feel safe, nurtured, and inspired. Where collaborative relationships with whānau and our community provide a strong foundation for our tamariki to learn.

Kaiako provide an environment where tamariki are empowered to become directors of their own learning through barrier-free access. With opportunities to build resilience, independence, and become competent, confident communicators in our local curriculum.

Our curriculum is inspired by Reggio Emilia philosophy where children are encouraged to learn holistically through exploration and discovery which excites their natural curiosity and wonder.

We are committed to honouring Te Tirito o Waitangi through our daily programme, rituals, and learning environment, using Te Whāriki to weave an individual learning pathway for each child. Twizel Early Learning Centre celebrates the rich diversity of our tamariki and embraces the many different cultures our whānau bring to our learning community.

Tamariki are provided with opportunities to explore the world around them whilst fostering lifelong skills and a love for learning that will continue with children throughout their lives.

Meet Our Dedicated Team

Centre manager Bridget

Bridget Tiffen

Kia ora,
I am the centre manager here at Twizel Early Learning Centre. I have a degree in Early Childhood Education and began my teaching career back in 2015. I have been fortunate to work with all age groups throughout my teaching career and stepped into various leadership positions during this time.

Having such a lovely centre and passionate team is a real privilege, and I love the relationships and care our team have with and for all our community of learners. I look forward to sharing in every child’s journey and supporting my team in providing the best possible care and education for your family.
Thanks :)

Kia ora,
I am a qualified Early Childhood Teacher and have been teaching at Twizel Early Learning Centre for fifteen years. I am the lead teacher in the Kakī Room (under 2s) and am passionate about teaching the infant and toddler age groups.

I grew up in Twizel and attended the centre myself as a preschooler. I have two daughters who also went through TELC, they are now 12 and 15.

I love Early Childhood teaching because no two days are the same and it is so rewarding to be part of the growth and development of tamariki in the early years, laying foundations for their future learning. I love the Twizel community and when I'm not at work I enjoy relaxing with family and friends, travelling, spending time in the garden or doing house renovations!

Kia ora,
I have been working in ECE for 18 years and have my full registration. I have two children aged 20 and 11 who I love spending time with doing family things.

Working as an ECE teacher has always been a passion of mine where I am able to be involved in young children's learning to support and guide them in growing up to be confident, capable, independent learners.

Barbara Burgess

Kia ora,
My name is Barbara Burgess, and I am a teacher here at Twizel Early Learning Centre. I have a Diploma in Early Childhood Education and have been teaching since 1985 at this centre.

It has been an exciting journey as we moved from a crèche to where we are today. It has been very rewarding to watch our tamariki achieve with the support of a caring and passionate team.

JESS AMOS

Kia ora,
My name is Jess Amos, and I have been a kaiako at Twizel Early Learning Centre for 10 years now. I am a fully registered primary-trained teacher, and I completed my studies in 2013 at Otago University.

The Mackenzie Country, and especially Twizel, has always been a special place for me and my family. Back in 2000, my grandparents started up High Country Salmon, so I have become very familiar with the area from a young age and I am now fortunate enough to live here.

In my spare time I love to involve myself in sports and explore the outdoors. My husband and 2 young boys (4 and 2) spend a lot of our time hunting, camping, fishing and jetboating. Life is going to get an extra bit more exciting for us all as we are expecting baby boy number 3 at the end of October!

Navrose Kaur

Kia ora!
My name is Navrose Kaur, and I proudly serve as an educator at the Twizel Early Learning Centre. It's been my privilege to be a part of this nurturing environment for the past three years, where I've had the pleasure of working with children.

Transitioning from my previous role as an Aquaculture technician, with qualifications in aquaculture and fisheries management, to the world of education has been a rewarding journey. Twizel Early Learning Centre has provided me with the opportunity to work with diverse age groups of children, and I cherish my time here, collaborating with my wonderful team.
Teacher Alicia

sofia IRis nunez

My name is Sofia Iris Nunez, I was born in the Philippines. I came to New Zealand for a working holiday in 2015 but I decided to stay in this beautiful country for good.

I completed a Certificate of Early Childhood Practise and I have been teaching for six years. I've been part of Twizel Early Learning Centre since January 2017 and I have been teaching both Kakī and Tūī/Taniwha children.

I love working with children as I get to learn alongside them and understand their nature at the same time. I enjoy supporting and developing their learning through fun and creative ways such as arts, music and movement, messy play and the use of loose parts. I believe that as a kaiako it is important that we promote an inclusive environment where it is safe for our children and their whānau to express their sense of identity and uniqueness.

The days that I am not working I enjoy getting out into nature, gardening or going out for a walk and also I enjoy watching movies, as well as spending time with my family and friends.

Twizel early learning centre has given my son so much confidence. From day one, the teachers have made him feel so special and have given him plenty of support to help him learn and develop. Every morning at drop off he is so excited to be there, I can clearly see how much he enjoys his time there. He has made such good friendships. With the guidance and support from his amazing teachers, I know in the future he will be more prepared for when he starts school.

We couldn't be happier with TELC! Their caring teachers have been amazingly supportive in helping my little one to adjust, especially since we're a bilingual family. From teaching him how to interact and play with other kids to encouraging his language development, they've been fantastic. The environment is cheerful and welcoming, and we really appreciate the flexibility to make casual visits on days he's not enrolled. It's a relief to know my child is in such good hands while I catch up on work. TELC is truly a joyful place filled with wonderful people. Highly recommended!

TELC has been a wonderful experience for our family. From day one all the teachers have gone above and beyond to make sure we all feel welcome, and that my son has a real sense of belonging there. He's always so excited to go each morning! He gets opportunities to be creative, explore and develop relationships in ways he wouldn't at home, which I've noticed has hugely helped his confidence grow! So thanks to all the team for really caring for my boy - you're all amazing!
